Roughly 30 million light-years from Earth, the Sombrero Galaxy lies in the constellation Virgo. Seen nearly edge-on from our perspective, its bright central bulge and broad ring of dust give it the appearance of a wide-brimmed hat.

In Webb’s near-infrared view, captured with the NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera), dust from the outer ring absorbs and scatters light from the stars within the disk, creating striking dark bands across the galaxy’s luminous core. The central region glows with the light of about 2,000 globular clusters, which are dense and ancient groups of stars held together by gravity.

Stars within these clusters should have similar chemical “fingerprints,” because they formed around the same time. However, stars within the Sombrero's globular clusters are unexpectedly different from one another, suggesting that the Sombrero Galaxy may have experienced a long-ago merger that reshaped its history and stellar population.
