The Sombrero Galaxy (Messier 104) is located approximately 30 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo.

In this image taken with Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), the clumpy structure of the dust along the galaxy’s outer ring becomes clearly visible.

The mid-infrared light highlights the gas and dust involved in star formation occurring within the Sombrero Galaxy’s outer disk. The rings of the galaxy produce less than one solar mass of stars per year, compared to the Milky Way’s roughly two solar masses annually. This indicates that the Sombrero Galaxy is not a particularly active region of star formation.
