When viewed in the infrared wavelength, as captured by Webb’s camera, Saturn appears extraordinarily dark due to the sunlight being absorbed by the atmospheric methane gas. Meanwhile the icy rings, located outside of the atmosphere, stay bright - creating this unusual silhouette of a familiar planet.

This new image of Saturn reveals clear details within the planet’s ring system, along with several of the planet’s moons (Dione, Enceladus, and Tethys).

Saturn’s rings are comprised of a mix of rock and ice fragments, ranging in size from minuscule particles smaller than a grain of sand to few as massive as whole mountains on Earth.
