In this image from Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), hundreds of background galaxies of varying sizes and shapes appear alongside the Neptune system. This is the clearest view of Neptune's rings in over 30 years, and the first time they’ve been observed in infrared light.
This wide-field view captures Neptune, along with its rings and moons, set against a stunning galactic backdrop. At the center is Neptune’s moon Triton, resembling a small teal snowflake, with a ringed, pearl-like Neptune positioned below and slightly to the right.
In the lower left, a barred spiral galaxy comes into view. Scientists estimate this previously unstudied galaxy to be about a billion light-years away. Spiral galaxies like this are typically dominated by young stars that appear blueish in these wavelengths.
