Expanding shells of gas and dust ripple outward from the dying star at the heart of NGC 6072, a planetary nebula in the constellation Scorpius. The pinkish-white dot at the center is believed to be the fading star itself, casting off its outer layers in a final burst of light. Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals these intricate structures, tracing glowing dust at wavelengths invisible to human eyes.

Cooler molecular gas appears blue in this color-mapped view, while faint concentric rings beyond the main lobes may hint at a binary star system—a companion star orbiting and sculpting circular shells of expelled material.

By observing nebulae like NGC 6072, astronomers deepen their understanding of how dying stars enrich space with elements that will one day form new stars and planets.
