Roughly 1,300 light-years away in the direction of the constellation Orion (The Hunter), rising from turbulent waves of dust and gas, is the Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33.
The Horsehead Nebula is famously recognized for its resemblance to a horse’s head. Webb captured the top of the "horse's mane" of this iconic nebula, providing us with the sharpest infrared images of the region to date.
The nebula formed from a collapsing interstellar cloud of material and glows because it is illuminated by a nearby hot star. While the gas clouds surrounding the Horsehead have already dissipated, the prominent pillar remains intact, composed of dense clumps of material that are more resistant to erosion. Astronomers estimate that the Horsehead has about five million years left before it, too, disintegrates.
This portion of the Horsehead Nebula spans about 0.8 light-years. The ethereal clouds that appear blue at the bottom of the image are filled with a variety of materials, including hydrogen, methane, and water ice. Young stars peek through the clouds, and distant galaxies are scattered in the background.
