Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Cassiopeia, roughly 11,000 light-years from Earth. It is estimated that light from the supernova itself first reached Earth about 340 years ago, around the year 1690.
Astronomers combined newly collected data from the JWST with previous observations from three other space telescopes to create this brilliant new image of a well-studied supernova.
This composite image contains X-rays from Chandra (blue), infrared data from Webb (red, green, blue), and optical data from Hubble (red and white). The outer parts of the image also include infrared data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (red, green, and blue).
An unusual structure, dubbed the “Green Monster,” lurks in the remains of this destroyed star. By combining data from these various telescopes, scientists have determined it was likely created by the blast wave of the exploding star slamming into surrounding material.
