Galaxy Pair VV 191 - Webb and Hubble Composite

By combining data from the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes, researchers traced light from the large white elliptical galaxy (left) through the spiral galaxy (right), revealing the effects of interstellar dust in the spiral galaxy. This image of galaxy pair VV 191 includes near-infrared light from Webb and ultraviolet and visible light from Hubble.
Webb’s near-infrared data exposes the spiral galaxy’s long, dusty arms in greater detail than ever, giving them the appearance of overlapping with the elliptical galaxy’s central bulge.
Although the two foreground galaxies are relatively close, astronomically speaking, they are not actively interacting.
Around 10 o’clock near the elliptical galaxy’s core, a faint red arc is visible. This is a distant galaxy, gravitationally lensed by the elliptical galaxy’s gravity, which has stretched and magnified its appearance.
In the background, Webb also captured several even more distant galaxies.
