Stars, gas, and cosmic dust in the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud glow in near-infrared light in this view from Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera). Located just a few hundred light-years from the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole, Sgr B2 is a turbulent nursery where countless young stars are taking shape. Despite containing only about 10% of the gas in the galactic center, this region produces roughly half of its stars, a puzzle astronomers are eager to understand.
Even Webb’s extraordinary infrared vision, capable of peering through thick curtains of dust and gas, meets its limits here. Some areas are so densely packed with material that not even Webb can penetrate them. These hidden pockets hold the seeds of future stars, wrapped in cocoons of gas and dust.
This near-infrared image reveals a dazzling field of colorful stars scattered across Sgr B2. By studying their light, astronomers hope to determine their ages and masses, unlocking clues about how stars form and evolve in one of the galaxy’s most extreme environments.
