Orbiting more than 1.7 billion miles from the Sun, Uranus now has a new addition to its family of moons. Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) discovered a previously unknown satellite, designated S/2025 U1, bringing the planet’s total moon count to 29.

The newfound moon is estimated to be about six miles (10 kilometers) wide, likely too small and dim to have been detected by earlier missions or telescopes. It orbits within Uranus’s inner system, making it the 14th moon inside the orbit of the planet’s five largest satellites: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon.

Due to the dramatic differences in brightness levels, this image combines three separate treatments of the data, allowing viewers to see details in the planet’s atmosphere, surrounding rings, and orbiting moons all in one composition.
