The galaxy cluster SDSS J1226+2152, located in the constellation Coma Berenices, distorts background galaxies into streaks of light through gravitational lensing. This phenomenon occurs when a massive object, like a galaxy cluster, bends spacetime, deflecting light from more distant galaxies as if through a colossal lens.
One of the most notable lensed galaxies in this rich field is named SGAS J12265.3+215220. It appears just above and to the right of the central galaxy. This galaxy lies far beyond the foreground cluster, giving astronomers a glimpse of its state roughly two billion years after the big bang.
Gravitational lensing, combined with the Webb Telescope’s infrared capabilities, allows astronomers to observe the finer details of distant galaxies, helping to study star formation and the environments that support it in these early cosmic structures.
Amid this spectacular display of gravitational lensing, a menagerie of spiral and elliptical galaxies in all shapes and sizes surround the galaxy cluster.
