The Phantom Galaxy (also known as M74 or NGC 628) is an iconic spiral galaxy located approximately 32 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces. It appears almost face-on from Earth, making it an ideal subject for studying galactic spirals due to its well-defined arms.

This image combines data from Webb's MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) and NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera), revealing intricate details of gas, dust, and stars. The dark red regions trace the filamentary warm dust permeating the galaxy, while the red areas show reprocessed light from complex molecules forming on dust grains. Orange and yellow tones highlight ionized gas surrounding newly formed star clusters. Stellar feedback has a dramatic effect on the galaxy creating a complex network of bright knots as well as cavernous black bubbles.

M74 is a "grand design spiral," characterized by its distinct, well-defined spiral arms, in contrast to the patchy structure of other spirals. The galaxy's lack of central gas also provides an unobstructed view of its nuclear star cluster.
