To mark its third year of groundbreaking science, the James Webb Space Telescope observed a portion of the Cat’s Paw Nebula (NGC 6334), a vast star-forming region about 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. Astronomers study this region to better understand how turbulent clouds of gas and dust collapse to form massive stars.

With its sharp near-infrared vision, Webb revealed clusters of glowing gas and dust shaped like a cat’s paw. These stellar nurseries are where new stars are forming and reshaping their surroundings. The intense radiation from these young stars sculpts the nearby material into bright, intricate structures seen as blue and orange filaments.

This image captures only a fleeting chapter in the nebula’s life. Over time, the same stars that light it up will also disrupt it, dispersing the gas and dust that fuel new star formation.
