A young star is coming to life in this remarkable Webb image of Herbig-Haro 49/50, a glowing outflow within our Milky Way. Seen in exquisite near- and mid-infrared detail, jets of material erupt from the forming star, carving arcs and filaments through the surrounding dust and gas. The bright reddish-orange structures trace regions where this high-speed jet slams into its environment, compressing and heating the material until it glows in infrared light emitted by molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Like ripples spreading behind a boat, these arcs reveal the power and turbulence of star birth. The image offers scientists rare insight into how jets from newborn stars influence their surroundings and help sculpt new generations of stars.
By coincidence, a distant spiral galaxy appears in the same view. Its soft blue center marks older stars, while reddish knots in its spiral arms signal regions rich with warm dust and new stellar activity.
