NGC 1566 is a spiral galaxy located 60 million light-years away in the constellation Dorado.

Webb’s high-resolution images are the first to reveal the galaxy’s large, spherical shells of gas and dust in such exquisite detail. These holes may have been created by stars that exploded, carving out giant regions in the interstellar material.

This spiral galaxy was observed as part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) program, a large project that includes a wide range of observations of many galaxies to help researchers study all phases of the star formation cycle — from the birth of stars within dusty gas clouds to the energy released in the process that creates the intricate structures revealed here by Webb’s images.

Older stars appear blue and are clustered at the galaxy’s core. Glowing dust, which shows where it exists around and between stars, is seen in shades of red and orange. Stars that have not yet fully formed, and are still encased in gas and dust, appear bright red.
