Using Webb's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and a special lens, engineers were able to capture this inward-looking photo of the primary mirror, helping them confirm alignment of the various mirrors.
The bright section is illumination from a star that the specific mirror is targeting, as that segment is directly aligned with the star and camera.
Compare with Webb's later (post-alignment) "selfie".
