This image showcases the star-forming cluster NGC 1333, located in the Perseus molecular cloud approximately 960 light-years away.

Webb’s superb sensitivity allows astronomers to investigate young objects with extremely low masses. Some of the faintest "stars" in the image are actually newly born, free-floating brown dwarfs with masses comparable to those of giant planets.

Unlike previous views from the Hubble Telescope, which only scratched the surface, Webb’s larger aperture lets us peer through thick clouds of dust, revealing the hidden process of star formation.

The glowing orange patches in the image represent Herbig-Haro objects, where material ejected by young stars collides with surrounding gas, lighting up the region like a cosmic nursery.

Some of the stars in this cluster are surrounded by discs of gas and dust, which may one day form entire planetary systems — much like how our own Sun and planets emerged from a similar cloud billions of years ago.
