FAQ

What type of paper are the prints on? And, what makes it unique?

Producing the highest quality prints is the priority. That's why all prints are made on a heavyweight fine art paper, specifically the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Metallic. The semi-gloss surface is capable of achieving extremely rich and detailed black areas, while its slightly metallic surface beautifully radiates the cosmological imagery.

What kind of inks and printing process is used?

The prints are Archival Pigment Prints, this is the same inkjet printing process that nearly all photographers and artists currently utilize when wanting to produce the widest gamut (range of colors), color accurate, and archival prints. Historically, the term "giclée" was also used to describe this type of printing.

What does it mean that these prints are archival (aka "museum quality")?

All paper and ink are archival, meaning they are resistant to fading or deteriorating with age. They are rated to be stable for a minimum 100+ years. This differs from cheaper, less expensive, mass produced forms of "poster" printing where the inks are liable to quickly fade and materials degrade.

What size prints are offered?

Currently, two sizes of prints are offered, 8x10" and 11x14". The files from the Webb Telescope are typically much lower resolution than even images from your cellphone camera. This means that if you attempt to print them too large, the image quality will be reduced, resulting in a pixellated print. Since our focus is to produce the highest quality, sharp images, we are currently focusing on those two print sizes.

How are the images and borders formatted?

For both sizes, the image is centered on the paper with a border outside, making the final sheet of paper either 8x10" or 11x14". The 8x10" has at minimum 1/2" on all sides. The 11x14" has at minimum 1" borders on all sides. This setup allows for relatively easy framing, as these are the most common frame sizes.

Are these images edited in any way?

A few types of image editing may occur in order to produce the best prints possible... (1) Images are sometimes slightly processed to improve quality and resolution for print. (2) While staying true to the original image, minimal adjustments to color and contrast may be made, in order to attain the best print. (3) In some cases, engineering text and data will be removed to create a cleaner more appealing visual image. (4) Images are on occasion may be slightly cropped to better accommodate a specific print size.

Can you tell me more about where these images come from?
