Size

The striking colors of these galaxies result from a combination of mid-infrared light from the James Webb Space Telescope and visible and ultraviolet light from the Hubble Space Telescope. Grazing one another millions of years ago, the smaller spiral on the left, catalogued as IC 2163, passed behind NGC 2207, the larger spiral galaxy at right.

Both galaxies have increased star formation rates, producing the equivalent of two dozen Sun-sized stars annually, compared to the Milky Way’s two or three it produces each year. They have also hosted seven known supernovae, which may have cleared space in their arms, rearranging gas and dust to allow new stars to form, visible in the bluest regions.

It’s possible this pair will swing by one another repeatedly over the course of many millions of years. Their cores and arms may eventually meld, leaving behind completely reshaped arms, and an even brighter cyclops-like “eye” at the core.
