The Digel Clouds are an outpost of star-formation located in the Milky Way’s "outer rim." This region, known as the Extreme Outer Galaxy, lies more than 58,000 light-years from the Galactic Center. For context, Earth is 26,000 light-years from the center.
Using Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) and MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), scientists have revealed a luminous main cluster containing newly formed stars. Several of these young stars are emitting extended jets of material from their poles. To the upper right of the main cluster is a sub-cluster of stars, a feature previously suspected by scientists but now confirmed.
Surrounding the star clusters is a deep sea of background galaxies and red nebulous structures, which are being carved away by winds and radiation from nearby stars.
